Spine Disorders and Home Health Care

May 14, 2013

Spine disorders are caused by several factors. Ankylosing spondylitis is the result of progressive arthritis that causes inflammation of the spine and the joints of the spine and pelvis. Degenerative disk disease is caused by wear and tear on the discs between the vertebrae of the spine, which act as shock absorbers. Spinal fractures are caused by trauma, too much pressure on the vertebrae, or diseases processes such as osteoporosis. All spinal disorders cause pain and stiffness, which makes it difficult to perform everyday normal activities. Home health care services help people who suffer with spine disorders by providing staff that will monitor their health, and assist them with activities of daily living, so they can live safely at home.

Home Health Care Services

The home health care team members consist of several disciplines such as a registered nurse, personal care assistant (PCA), social worker, physical therapist, occupational therapist and dietician. The registered nurse conducts the admission, and performs an initial health assessment from which she creates an individualized care plan for all of the health care team members to follow. She also manages clients' medication and notifies the physician about the health status of the clients. The registered nurse also arranges Interdisciplinary Meetings (IDT) on a monthly basis to discuss the progress or decline of the patient and to make necessary changes to the care plan. A physical therapist teaches exercises that help strengthen muscles to support the spine, and the occupational therapist instructs the clients how to perform safe techniques for bathing, dressing and other activities of daily living.

Personal Care Services

Personal Care Services is the component of home care which assists with and provides personal care for the clients. A personal care assistant (PCA) provides assistance with activities of daily living such as bathing, dressing, light housekeeping, and cooking. She may also have the task of transporting clients to medical appointments or on errands. The PCA is the team member who spends the most time with the client and conveys concerns to the registered nurse.

People with spine disorders who receive home care services have the assurance of knowing that they have a support system who cares for them and will be an advocate for them.
