How Respite Care Helps Cure Caregiver Burnout

April 19, 2019

One of the biggest challenges that caregivers face in their line of work is burnout. Caregiver burnout is a serious problem as it not only impacts the mental and physical wellbeing of family caregivers but also the ability to perform at their job.

This week we’d like to discuss why respite care may be a beneficial solution to caregivers experiencing burnout and in need of a little bit of a break.

What is respite care?

Respite care is short-term or temporary quality care that's provided to either children and adults. It often spans for as little as a few hours a day to as long as a few months a year.

How can it help home caregivers?

Respite care offers long-term caregivers a chance for a break. Whether you care for a loved one or a client, the day-to-day toll of being responsible for another individual can and will likely begin to wear on you. Especially as a family caregiver who must devote constant attention to their child or parent, sometimes even having a few hours to yourself can be extremely helpful to recharge.

Respite care also allows for home caregivers to complete other tasks whether they are related to their jobs or not. It can allow them time to attend their own appointments, run errands, or attend meetings without taking their loved one along with them.

How can it help those that need homecare services?

While caregivers may have a hard time leaving their client or loved one with another caregiver, it can actually be beneficial for the care recipient. For both children and adults that receive care, seeing another caregiver from time to time can be helpful in allowing them to form relationships and bonds with other people- outside of those they see every day.
