Living with rheumatoid arthritis can be tough, both physically and emotionally. As an autoimmune disease, it causes inflammation of joints and surrounding tissues, particularly the synovium, which is the thin membrane that lines joints.
Rheumatoid arthritis causes disfigurement of extremities which make normal, everyday activities difficult. Eventually, the disease will affect other organs of the body. Home care services help to make living with rheumatoid arthritis easier and safer for the recipient of care and give their loved ones full peace of mind.
Unfortunately, there is no known cure for rheumatoid arthritis. That means that the affected individual will be living with their condition in some shape or form for the rest of their lives. That makes it even more important to find them the best possible care.
Home care services can take a multi-disciplinary approach to help individuals living with rheumatoid arthritis in their home. The home care team can include a personal care assistant (PCA). A PCA supports individuals with non-medical, health-related needs and daily activities. The goal of PCA services, as with other homecare options, is to help individuals live independently in their homes and community, as opposed to a facility.
When it comes to home care, the PCA is the team member who spends the most time with the individual living with rheumatoid arthritis. She/He can assist with bathing, light housekeeping, cooking, and shopping for groceries. The PCA can also prepare meals and give reminders for when to take medications.
She/He may also have the responsibility of taking the individual to their medical appointments and on errands. The PCA also makes sure the recipient of care is eating nutritious meals throughout the day.
Patients with rheumatoid arthritis are able to live independently in their homes with home care services. This gives them peace of mind knowing that they have a support network that cares for them and is there when they need them the most.
