Tips for Healthy Meal Planning with Your Home Care Client

March 22, 2019

Providing the best homecare services involves much more than simply helping clients perform daily tasks. Many recipients of home care are looking to make positive changes to their lifestyle, and as a personal care assistant (PCA), you can contribute to helping your clients make such changes. The easiest way to start creating healthy habits is by incorporating better foods into your diet.

This week’s blog post, we wanted to focus on sharing tips for caregivers on creating healthy meal plans for their patients or loved ones.

  1. Load Up on Veggies: Vegetables should make up the largest portion of your meals. When preparing a meal, be sure to serve the main course over a bed of leafy greens or broccoli.
  2. Switch to Whole Grains and Wheat: Switching to wheat bread instead of white bread or brown rice instead of white is a simple and easy way to get more nutrients.
  3. Eat Fruits by Themselves: Fruits have plenty of water and vitamins, which make them great for a healthy snack. However, because they are high in fiber, they are best eaten by themselves. Try starting the day off with a fruit plate and then waiting an hour, or so before having another snack.
  4. Switch to Lean Meats and Proteins: Lean meats like poultry or fish have protein and iron but contain less fat than pork or beef. Beans, nuts, and seeds also contain protein but have no animal fat and can help lower your cholesterol.
  5. Switch to Low-Fat Milk: Switching to skim or 1% milk will help cut down on fats. Switching to plant-based milk is another great option for lowering your fat intake.
  6. Start Meal Prepping: If you prepare meals ahead of time, it makes it much easier for your client or loved one to stick to a meal plan. You can prepare a few days to a week’s worth of meals at one time and use post-it notes to label breakfast, lunch, and dinner for each day.
