CFSS is coming in Minnesota!
Navigating daily life can be challenging for individuals with disabilities, especially when it comes to getting around the community to run errands, attend appointments, and enjoy recreational activities. Family caregivers are often tasked with arranging safe, reliable, and accessible transportation for their loved ones, which helps ensure their well-being and independence.
In today's article, we’re going to provide some Minnesota-specific resources for disabled transportation services. Please don’t hesitate to reach out to our office with further questions!
The Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) is a sweeping piece of legislation that has provisions for how people with disabilities are entitled to accessible services and accommodations. The ADA also ensures that people with disabilities can access public transportation independently.
Under the ADA, transportation providers must offer reasonable accommodations. This means adjusting standard practices to ensure accessibility. For instance, if a wheelchair user can't board a bus due to sidewalk construction or snow, the bus operator must adjust the boarding location.
Also, public transit services must allow individuals with disabilities to request modifications to their policies. If a request is denied, the provider must still find ways to offer services without compromising safety or fundamentally altering operations. This policy is known as ADA Paratransit Services. The National Aging and Disability Transportation Center (NADTC) further notes that ADA paratransit services “must be provided within 3/4 of a mile of a bus route or rail station, at the same hours and days, for no more than twice the regular fixed route fare. Personal Care Attendants should not be charged a fare.”
Public transportation in Minnesota that complies with ADA paratransit rules can be accessed through Dial a Ride and Transit Link.
Another way to find local, accessible transportation services is by dialing 2-1-1. Through this hotline, the United Way provides free, confidential information on health and human services, which includes information on transportation. These call centers are staffed 24/7 by Community Resource Specialists.
Mobility for All is a Minnesota organization that specializes in transporting senior citizens with personalized services at an affordable rate.
People on medical assistance in the 10-county metro area can access Minnesota Non-Emergency Medical Transportation (NEMT).
Even rideshare companies have accessible options. Uber WAV (Wheelchair Accessible Vehicle) offers rides for a price comparable to UberX. It provides easy access for individuals using wheelchairs or scooters.
