Does Insurance Cover Pediatric Home Care?

April 7, 2022

When it comes to child care, every parent wants the best for their son or daughter. Some children have more complex or long-term needs than others, which can put a strain on the energy and resources of a family.

Pediatric home care can be one way to take the strain off of parents and caregivers, while still making sure the child is receiving the best care possible.

What is pediatric home care?

Pediatric home care services can be life-changing for parents, the child in need of care, and the entire family. Child home care allows your child to receive the support and quality care he or she needs, while also giving parents and other family members a mental and physical break from providing around-the-clock care.

This type of homecare service also ensures that your child can remain in the comfort of your home and continue to live with the family, instead of moving to an unfamiliar medical or full-time care setting.

Pediatric home care can range from social and educational support to assistance in hygiene and safety—all within the home. It can be tailored to suit the needs of individual children and families.

There are various criteria that mean a child qualifies for home care.

These include:

  • Issues associated with being born prematurely
  • Needing nightly supervision or assistance
  • Needing support during school hours
  • Being diagnosed with autism
  • Requiring a ventilator or tube feeding
  • Having complications due to a congenital heart defect or abnormality
  • Having limited mobility, cerebral palsy, or suffering from seizures

What financial support is available to families in need of pediatric home care?

If your child is eligible for home care, the next question is how to pay for such services. Many health insurance companies have policies that include home care.

For low-income families, there is also support available via Minnesota Assistance (MA). Most people who have MA receive healthcare through their health plans, but members who do not get healthcare through a health plan can receive care on a fee-for-service basis, with providers billing the state directly for services they provide.

There are several factors that can affect your coverage.

These include:

  • Income limits, which depend on the program you qualify for, as well as age, family size, and pregnancy or disability status (if applicable)
  • Cooperation with other insurance policies
  • Cost of monthly premiums

Minnesota’s Department of Human Services advises that the only way to find out if you and your family are eligible is to apply! You can do so via their website.
