Caring for another individual can be a rewarding experience for so many reasons. If you’re looking to provide homecare services for a loved one who is either elderly or living with a disability, becoming a Personal Care Assistant (PCA) may be the right career path for you!

What are PCA Services?

A PCA is responsible for helping clients perform daily activities that may be difficult for them to do independently, due to each individual’s health care needs. From everyday activities and household tasks to non-medical home health services and intervention for behavior, PCAs help clients reclaim their independence and receive compensation for their quality caregiving support.

How to Become a PCA in Minnesota

  1. The first thing you need to do is register with the Department of Human Services. You can register online, prior to taking the training and online test.
  2. Anyone who becomes a PCA must first take the Department of Human Services’ Individual Personal Care Assistant Training Course. The course is free and online!
  3. Once you complete the course, it’s time to take the test. The test is available online and may be taken as many times as necessary.
  4. Once you have completed training and passed the test, you’ll have the opportunity to print your home health aide certification, stating that you have successfully completed the exam. The Department of Human Services website will also email you this certificate upon test completion. It’s important to keep two copies of your certificate—one to send to your future employer, and one for your personal records.
