Home Caregiving in Minnesota: By the Numbers

May 30, 2015

studying-703002_1280As a Minneapolis home care agency, Best Home Care is proud of the state we call home. Even though the winters can be nothing short of brutal, Minnesota is a wonderful place to live, work, and play any time of year. We may be biased but we believe that Minnesotans are the nicest and most generous people you’ll ever meet. Visit anywhere else in the world and you’ll soon understand the meaning of “Minnesota Nice.”

This Minnesota Nice mindset doesn’t end with the people that live here. Our state has some of the friendliest home care programs to support personal care assistants and informal family caregivers. In fact, Minnesota was one of the first states to adopt Medicaid’s Cash and Counseling Program that provides elderly and disabled individuals funding to pay for home care services.

As a result of these great programs, Minnesota has one of the strongest work forces of home care professionals in the country. Here are some fast facts on Minnesota caregivers from 2014:

  • 503,500 informal caregivers provided 539 million hours of home care
  • $5.3 billion is the estimated value of this informal caregiving
  • 8.1% of disabled Minnesotans age 18-64 received some form of at home care
  • 31.8% of disabled Minnesotans age 64+ received at home care
  • $30 is the average hourly cost for home health care
  • $10.80 is the median hourly wage for personal care assistants and home care aides

It is interesting to note that the median hourly wage for personal care assistants in Minnesota has consistently been a dollar or more above the national average for the past 5 years.
