5 Ways to Keep at-Home Health Care Safe for Someone Living with Alzheimer’s

September 7, 2018

Providing at-home health care to someone living with Alzheimer’sIn honor of September being World Alzheimer’s Month, we at Best Home Care wanted to share some helpful ideas for caregivers to try when providing quality at-home health care to help promote a safe environment for a loved one who is living with Alzheimer’s.

Here are a few precautions to take to help safeguard your home:

1. Remove clutter: Remember to keep spaces clear, especially around doors and entryways. It’s important to keep the area clean and tidy to avoid tripping or stumbling over shoes, coats, bags, or anything near the ground that could cause harm. Also, make sure to tuck in electrical cords, so they do not become a tripping hazard on the floor.

2. Provide handrails and bars for balance: Installing handrails along any steps or along hallways provides added assistance when a loved one is trying to move around their home. For bathrooms and bedrooms, install a grab bar for easy access and mobility.

3. Install safety locks: Certain household items can be dangerous for a loved one living with Alzheimer’s. Install some safety locks on drawers and cupboards that contain sharp objects or cleaning products.
4. Install safety alarms: In addition to fire and carbon-monoxide detectors, consider security systems and alarms to give you more peace of mind that your loved one is safe at home.
5. Remove fire hazards: In addition to removing clutter, it’s essential to remove anything else that could be considered hazardous. This includes potential fire hazards, such as electric blankets, heating pads, and space heaters.

Alzheimer’s affects each individual differently, but to ensure your loved one’s safety, it's essential to take as many precautions as possible to avoid any (and all types) of accidents.
