Understanding the Different Types of Home Care Services

December 9, 2019

When most people hear the phrase “home care services,” they tend to focus on at-home senior care. And while seniors can certainly benefit from hiring a home care agency to assist them with completing daily tasks, other home care options are available to any age group.

To help you understand the types of home care services available to you in the state of Minnesota, here is a quick breakdown of your options:

  • Home Care Services for Seniors: Whether your parent or grandparent has recently undergone surgery, is recovering from an illness, or is experiencing difficulty managing daily tasks (e.g. dressing, bathing, cooking, cleaning, etc.), home care services allow your loved ones to still enjoy their independence and receive quality care in the comfort of their home. Many families prefer this option, rather than having to relocate a parent to an assisted living facility or nursing home.
  • Home Care Services for Children: Is your child living with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) or a physical disability that requires round-the-clock care? Pediatric home care services can ensure your son or daughter receives quality caregiving from a certified personal care assistant and/or a family caregiver. In the state of Minnesota, for example, siblings, relatives, and close family friends are eligible to apply and become caregivers for a child in need of autism home care services. For parents or legal guardians, this option gives you peace of mind, knowing your child is receiving support in a comfortable, familiar surrounding (i.e. home) while you’re at work or away.

  • Home Care Services for Adults Living with a Disability: One of the biggest fears for a parent is protecting your child living with a disability, as they age. Home care disability services can include live-in and daytime caregivers to assist your adult child in pursuing an independent lifestyle away from the family home. Adults may be eligible for respite care, as well. This type of home care service provides short-term quality care, if your child is suffering from a recent injury or is recovering from surgery or an illness.

Differences between Short-Term vs. Long Term Home Care Services

Determining whether a person requires short-term vs. long term home care services will depend on the individual's PCA assessment. The assessment involves a professional evaluation of the person’s condition and home care needs. A certified nurse will determine how many hours the individual will receive, as well as what type of activities will be included in the care plan and when services will begin. Services are typically authorized in two, six month date spans, and the hours are divided equally between each six month period. From there, care plans will require another evaluation to determine whether more or less hours are needed.
