Exercising for Balance and Mobility

March 27, 2018

Exercising provides many health benefits for seniors, both physically and mentally. Seniors have quite a lot to gain from regular exercise, especially those that focus on balance and mobility. Regular exercise can make a big difference!

For seniors who benefit from in-home supportive services, there are a number of great exercises that can be done with the help of a personal care assistant.

Here are some of our favorites!

  • Sit in a chair in an upright position with feet on the floor. Lift arms in a 90-degree angle as if forming a goal post, then bring the arms together and open them back up.
    • This exercise increases shoulder flexibility and stability!
  • Stand in front of a chair and slowly lower your body to the chair as if about to sit. Lower down to lightly touch the chair and then slowly stand back up.
    • This exercise helps build strength in the knee muscles and increases mobility in the joints.
  • Sit in a chair with your feet on the floor. Twist your upper body so shoulders are turned to the left, holding onto the chair for support. Hold for 30 seconds and repeat on the right side.
    • This stretch helps improve range of motion as well as reduce back pain.
  • Stand next to a chair and hold on for balance, then practice lifting one foot slightly for a few seconds. Then, switch to the other foot. Practice lifting fingers from the chair, then when comfortable, let go of the chair completely.
    • This exercise helps with balance and stability and can help decrease the risk of falls.
