Volunteer Opportunities for Seniors and Personal Care Assistants

March 2, 2018

One of the biggest adjustments for retirees is the sudden open calendar. As we age and leave the workforce, it can be more difficult to find opportunities to interact with others and give back to your community (while being aware of more limited physical abilities).

Caregivers can provide excellent company and interaction with their patients, but adding ways for seniors to stay involved and make a difference in the world, while improving their own mental and physical health, really complements in-home supportive services.

Here are some ways personal care assistants can help senior patients get involved in volunteer work:

  • The Senior Corps Foster Grandparent program allows seniors to spend time with children in youth facilities by monitoring playrooms, reading stories, and even providing tutoring.
  • Habitat for Humanity is a great organization that builds affordable housing for those in need. Not all volunteer positions involve construction – finding a position with the appropriate physical requirements is easy.
  • Meals on Wheels is an organization that fights hunger and malnutrition by delivering meals. Many of the volunteers are retirees, and this is a great activity for personal care assistants and seniors to do together.
  • Political volunteering is also a good way to get involved and support local and national causes. In some cases, all you need to volunteer is passion and a phone.
  • Volunteering with the Humane Society is an option for seniors who love animals but may not be able to have one of their own. Retirees can help with everything from walking dogs to administrative work.

Best Home Care is always on the lookout for ways to improve the quality of life for seniors in need of homecare services, so be sure to check out our blogs every week for more suggestions.
